July has arrived and the sun is shining outside, but here at Lusijoia, our eyes are set on Los Angeles. Why? Because the nominees for the 78th Emmy Awards have just been announced – and let's face it, there are plenty of great series to discuss.

The ceremony will take place on September 14th at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, and will be hosted by none other than Mariska Hargitay, the eternal Olivia Benson from Law & Order: SVU. She is the first woman to host the Emmys in 15 years – and here in Portugal, we give her a standing ovation.

But let's get to what matters: who are the nominees, what's going to be talked about, and by the way, what jewelry would we love to see on the red carpet?

The Pitt leads (and by a wide margin)

If you haven't seen The Pitt yet, you're missing one of the best medical series in recent years. The series, which takes place in an emergency room in Pittsburgh, achieved the feat of garnering 25 nominations – more than any other production this year.
Among the most notable nominations, highlights include Noah Wyle (yes, Dr. Carter from ER) for Best Actor in a Drama Series, and an impressive number of supporting actors – seven, to be exact, competing in the supporting actor and actress categories.
And there's a curiosity that makes us especially proud: Australian actress Shabana Azeez, who was born in Adelaide but has Portuguese roots, is one of the series' protagonists. Isn't it incredible to see Lusophone talent shining abroad?

Hacks makes history (and we like history)

In second place, with 24 nominations, is Hacks, the comedy series that ended this year with its fifth season. And it's not just any nomination – it's a record. Never before has a comedy series received so many nominations in a single year.
Jean Smart, the lead actress who plays comedian Deborah Vance, is nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy – for the fourth time. And her scene partner, Hannah Einbinder, is nominated for Best Supporting Actress. It's the power of the duo, and we love to see it.
If you enjoy intelligent series with sharp dialogue and characters that make you laugh and cry at the same time, Hacks is a safe bet.

Other series worth highlighting

The Pitt and Hacks are the big stars, but there's much more to see:

• Widow's Bay (19 nominations) – an Apple TV+ horror comedy that has won over critics with its unusual blend of dark humor and suspense.
• Pluribus (18 nominations) – an Apple TV+ sci-fi series that makes us question what is real and what is simulation.
• Beef (16 nominations) – the series that showed us that a traffic disagreement can be the start of a hilarious and, at the same time, disturbing war of egos.

And by the way, one absence that made us scratch our heads: Stranger Things is not nominated for Best Drama Series. Despite having a few technical nominations, the sci-fi series was left out of the main categories. It is undoubtedly one of the year's surprises (and disappointments).

The absences that hurt (and the ones that make us laugh)

Now, the fun part: the snubs – those nominations that were left hanging and left fans fuming.

Jeremy Allen White, the star of The Bear, was left off the Best Comedy Actor list. Yes, the same actor who won the Emmy in 2024 and 2025. It's, at the very least, surprising – and fans are already reacting on social media.
Stranger Things, as we've already mentioned, was practically ignored in the main categories. Despite having a few technical nominations, the sci-fi series wasn't considered for Best Drama Series.
And some lament the absence of Grace Gummer in the series Love Story. The actress was not nominated, despite good reviews – and fans of the series are already making noise.

If this isn't true commitment to art, we don't know what is!

But deep down, we all know that the real prize is what we already have: the pleasure of watching good stories, being moved by well-constructed characters, and sharing those experiences with those we love.
