Stainless steel
Stainless steel is a metallic alloy composed essentially of iron, chromium, and nickel. It is the presence of chromium (at least 10.5% of the composition) that gives it its famous resistance to corrosion and oxidation. This occurs because chromium reacts with oxygen and forms a thin, invisible layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the metal – a veritable armor that prevents rust and tarnishing.
